Possibly Irish band symbol of Makaio's bodhran drum
Title Possibly Irish Meet the Band
﷯ FROM LEFT TO RIGHT-Original Band Members ﷯ ABBY ULVELAND - Abby plays the fiddle (plus vocals) and at 16 is the youngest member of the group. She participates in the Salem Youth Symphony. She is a trained dancer in ballet, tap and jazz and has a major interest in science, being very fascinated by how things work. Abby wants to get her pilot's license and has flown 3 times. ﷯MAKAIO CAUDEL - Makaio is the group's lead male singer and also plays the Bodhran drum and penny whistle. 20 years old, Makaio is a voice-over artist, has his own YouTube channel, DaCatMatt, with over 35,000 followers and his Anime Impressions video has over 500,000 views. Makaio is currently attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in L.A. Makaio spent most of his time growing up in New Zealand and plans to travel the world, own a sailboat and live in a small village in Ireland. ﷯SUSAN VASLEV - Susan plays hammered dulcimer, penny whistle, Bodran drum plus vocals and is the oldest member of the group...much older. Susan is part of the family that has created the Enchanted Forest theme park. She composes and records all the music for the park and has composed several songs for Possibly Irish. Susan used to be a touring harpsichordist and has a music degree from the University of Oregon and post graduate studies in Paris, France. She also directs and writes the musical theatre shows at Enchanted Forest. ﷯CABEAU SCHUERGER - Cabeau plays guitar and sings in the band. Cabeau has been acting since he was a young child and plans to pursue it as a career. He is an actor in the theatre at Enchanted Forest and also in numerous productions in the Albany area. He can also be heard around the park performing country music. He loves "adventuring" and watching his favorite movie Surf's Up. At 17, he is a DJ and performs as his DJ alter ego Sugar Cannon. ﷯EMMA ULVELAND - 18 years old, Emma is lead female singer in the band and plays guitar and cello. Susan and Emma also perform Irish step dance at many performances. Emma also plays country music with her sister in the Western Town at Enchanted Forest. She is a trained dancer in ballet, tap and jazz and is a super achiever in high school. She wants to study pediatric medicine and be a singer/song writer. She is currently attending college in Canada. NEW BAND MEMBERS! Keeping It Celtic joins Possibly Irish January 2017. ﷯ FROM LEFT TO RIGHT-New Band Members Possibly Irish and Keeping It Celtic have now become one band. Yes, you see Susan in both bands. ﷯EVAN MERKLIN- 19 years old, Evan plays the fiddle (plus vocals) for the band. Evan is currently attending Chemeketa Community College in pursuit of a degree in music education. He has been playing fiddle for a long time and brings his signature high energy and dry humor to the band that always keeps the audience on their toes. Evan is also the band's sound engineer, leading the way through the recording of the new CD from former Keeping It Celtic members. ﷯NOAH VANDERBURGH- Noah was Keeping It Celtic's lead male singer and plays the bodhran drum as well as the penny whistle. 18 years old, Noah has been singing in school choirs for 5 years now and attends Oregon State University, where he is pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. He has been in several high school theatre productions and combines his experience as a performer with his great work ethic to make sure the band is always at its best. Noah hopes to someday work for NASA or Boeing to design aircraft. ﷯SUSAN VASLEV- Yes, you see Susan in both bands. She is an original member of Possibly Irish and created Keeping It Celtic to help cover the group's busy summer schedule at Enchanted Forest. Band members from both bands ended up substituting for each other, and not just at Enchanted Forest, but at gigs and festivals and decided it just made sense to join the bands together. ﷯SAMANTHA OWINGS- Samantha (Sami for short) was lead female vocalist is Keeping It Celtic and plays the Celtic harp, which her father made for her. The wood was all cut from within 10 miles of her home in Aurora, so it is truly an Oregon harp. At 18 years old, her classically trained voice helps balance out the other guys when things get little too pirate-y. Sami is currently attending Brigham Young University in Utah. ﷯TIMOTHY WARD- Tim plays guitar and sings. He is 18 years old and entering his third year of college at Western Oregon University. Tim, Noah and Evan love performing in the Western Town at the Enchanted Forest any morning they can get together. Tim started out in the theatre at Enchanted Forest, but when auditions opened for Keeping it Celtic he didn't hesitate. A storyteller and poet at heart, Tim loves performing Irish music because of the elaborate stories told by the songs. New member Molly Duddleston just joined the band in September 2017 and will be seen at most of the fall performances. HOW POSSIBLY IRISH STARTED Possibly Irish formed in July of 2015. Susan Vaslev, director of theatre at Enchanted Forest, was late to warm-ups one morning. She asked Makaio what they had been doing to warm up and he said they had been singing Irish songs. Susan, who had just returned from Ireland, asked them to sing the Irish songs for her. She immediately said they should start a band to perform in the park. Within a few days, the band was formed with Makaio, Cabeau, Emma and Susan, all members of the theatre department at Enchanted Forest. While rehearsing one day, Makaio said, "If only we had a fiddle player!" Emma said her little sister played the fiddle, and the group became complete. For the 2016 season at Enchanted Forest, Susan decided to create a second band to help cover the group's busy summer schedule at Enchanted Forest. Musicians auditioned for this band and the result was the talented group of musicians that came together to form Keeping It Celtic. Band members from both bands ended up substituting for each other, and not just at Enchanted Forest, but at gigs and festivals and decided it just made sense to join the bands together , which they did January 2017. HOW THE BAND MEMBERS DESCRIBE EACH OTHER'S PERSONALITIES ORIGINAL BAND ABBY At first, Abby was scared to be part of the group, in fact, quiet and terrified being so young in comparison to the rest of the group. Now she is the most feisty member of the band, not afraid to tell you what she thinks. She is very excitable and passionate, but we sometimes can't get her to smile while she's playing the fiddle, even though she's having a great time. We think she doesn't smile because she doesn't want to look like she has a double chin when she plays the fiddle. Don't worry, she smiles more than anyone else in rehearsal or when we are just playing around. Several young people have come up to her after shows saying that because of her they want to play fiddle/violin or used to play it and are going to start playing it again. Those are the times we think she might cry. She volunteers at the hospital and runs cross country. Yes, she has come to recording sessions straight from a race, in track clothes, exhausted and sweaty. MAKAIO The group's hippie, he takes turns with Abby braiding hair. He wishes he was Jack Frost and looks great in a white wig...so bleached his hair, but it didn't turn out white. We didn't think he was very excited in the beginning so he had to show us his 3 main expressions so we could interpret when he doesn't like something, when he thinks something is good and when he thinks something is "Wow!" Has a new passion every month, right now it's space, no it's spray paint art, no it's magic, no it's caricature drawing, no it's French, ....what is it this week? His parents worked hard to raise him as a good Catholic boy, and are still trying. He is a very spiritual, deep thinker, which did not translate well to good grades at his Catholic High School. We cheered when he graduated. It was a close one. Whew! But he is now at Chemeketa Community College exploring his future. He has not had a dream that he remembers since he was 11, which probably explains those High School years. Favorite book...The Alchemist, given to him by his Dad. SUSAN Able to pick up any instrument, like the Hammered Dulcimer, in a matter of weeks. The best boss in the world. An idea person, and she is always overly excited about any idea she has, both bad and fantastic. She has the power to make things happen. You like to draw caricatures? Great! Let's do it on the streets of Enchanted Forest tomorrow and sell the paintings. You want to play washboard and guitar? Great! Go up to the western town today, plug in a mic and amp and perform. Things happen immediately around her. She has so much more life experience than the rest of us. Things will come out of her mouth like they are no big deal, like, "when I was performing in Paris", and you just do a double take. It's so cool. She is the only one of us old enough to be able to mingle in a bar (we can just perform,) so that automatically puts her in change of some things, so yeah, she's the boss of us. But, it's still a democracy. CABEAU Always joking and sarcastic...always. He had to start raising his hand so we know the rare times when he's not joking, Always smiling. I don't think I've ever seen him frown. He is in love with his own hair and loves pirate shirts and stupid pirate jokes. He is our California transplant city boy. No suburbs for him. Home schooled and proud of it. Favorite book is The Great Gatsby. The hardest to schedule around because he is always acting in a theatre production. We love going to watch whatever production he is in. We are his biggest fans. EMMA Very excitable and positive. She can be so sweet and radiate sunshine one second and so intense and explosive the next second. It's hilarious. You can't say anything mean to or about Emma because she will take it personally even if it is just a joke. She won't realize until months later that we were just joking. She's our super achiever in school taking IB (International Baccalaureate) classes. She studies all the time and is overbooked, including volunteering at the hospital. Very focused. Possibly Irish is her oasis from her stressed, over booked life. She has a huge desire to live among elephants for part of her life so we can imagine her practicing medicine in Africa or India. She loves nature and animals and wants to live on a farm one day with pet cows and sheep. Her rat Angie is her best friend along with her brother and sister. NEW MEMBERS, FORMERLY KEEPING IT CELTIC EVAN We don't think we've ever seen him get upset by anything. He's very cool and collected even when things go wrong in the middle of a show; he's the ideal performing partner. He is now teaching music and loving it. He's a great guy, always ready to either crack a hilarious joke or to buckle down and get work done. We are pretty sure he plays every single instrument ever. He's learning the electric mandolin right now if that says anything. He might not talk much during the show but when he does it's hilarious! We honestly wouldn't be surprised if he ends up running the largest recording studio ever sometime in the future, he's got an incredible amount of technical knowledge which, combined with his highly attuned ear for music, makes him a recording powerhouse. Working with him in the studio is like a dream come true. NOAH When he isn't performing in the band at Enchanted Forest he's working as Susan's assistant in the office or running errands or helping her designing advertisements or web pages for the park. He's nonstop. His voice might not make it to the end of a day of shows, but even then it's killer! He is always trying new things while we are rehearsing that we end up adding to the songs because they sound so good. Sometimes he gets a little carried away with one of his ideas, but it always ends up becoming something productive regardless of how off track he gets. He's always cracking jokes and making puns about everything, sometimes it's annoying, but it's usually pretty funny. He has a drone and crashed it at the shoe slide at Enchanted Forest when we were filming. Respectful and responsible are what comes to mind, he loves to goof off and have fun but always knows when it's time to be serious and focus. SAMANTHA A fountain of optimism; she is very honest and fun-loving but takes her craft very seriously so you know when she cares about something she'll stop at nothing to perfect it. She's a hybrid between a hippie and prep school girl if that's possible; Very dedicated to being very open and relaxed. We honestly don't know what color her eyes are, she wears a new color of contacts every day She is very much in tune with nature, she often walks around barefoot and often wears earthen tones, she's a nature girl. She's so much fun to be around! Always telling stories or showing us new techniques or styles she's applying to her playing. She makes sure everybody is included in everything she does, whether you like it or not! TIMOTHY Although he wears all black, Timothy is probably the nicest member of the band. Tim is such a teddy bear, he's nice to everyone regardless of how long he's known them. We keep telling him to add some color to his outfit but he just replies: "My personality IS the color" He's already a junior in college but he's 18, so obviously he loves working and striving to be better. Tim is always respectful of the other band mates' opinions (which is important when you're in a room full of performers), he can tell you you're doing something wrong in a way that you'll be the one thanking him and you won't even know he did it. Tim started learning how to play the guitar a month before auditions were held for the band, and he hasn't stopped improving since. FUN FACTs Are they a family? No, but Abby and Emma are sisters. (They act like a family.) EMMA and ABBY - Sister love in the extreme MAKAIO and CABEAU - They would be brothers if they could, constantly feeding off each other in a comedy frenzy. They do "manly' things together outside of work like hiking, movie night, making videos... SUSAN and EVERYONE ELSE - Boss and friend (a strange combo)
